HOW TO TEACH YOUR BABY TO CHEW

1. BE PATIENT

If your baby is already more than 9-10 months old and there are problems with chewing, then you should not give mashed potatoes today, and finger foods tomorrow. Your baby just won't understand what is happening and, most likely, this experience will not end very well. Your baby will either spit it out or choke and get scared. Start with "micro-doses" (pieces the size of a rice). Buckwheat/rice groats or small pieces of any soft foods are perfect. As soon as your baby begins to cope with such pieces easily, eat not one, but several such pieces at once, chew and swallow them well, you can offer him small soft 1x1cm pieces, for example, baked or steamed apple, pear or pumpkin. The size of the pieces, the volume of the portion of food in pieces and the hardness of the pieces themselves will gradually increase.

2. DON'T BE SCARED

I guess every mother has noticed how sensitive kids feel to our mood. They are naughty when we get angry or upset, and calm down fearfully when we are afraid. Therefore, if the mother offering the finger food is afraid, then the baby, feeling this, will also be afraid, will not open her mouth, spit out or choke. Pull yourself together and start believing in your child.

3. DO NOT MIX FINGER FOODS WITH PUREE

Here is an example: you are drinking, say, yogurt ... and then you suddenly come across a piece of something in it, most likely you will either spit it out or choke, some will even vomit. It will not be the most pleasant surprise and you will hardly want to continue the meal.
In babies, the reaction is the same: he is eating, or rather even drinking (swallowing without chewing) his mashed potatoes, but in it, he feels a foreign object, a defensive reaction - will get rid of it. Therefore, we offer pieces before or after mashed potatoes.

4. BE IN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION
- Do not move away from your child, do not turn away, do not go into another room and do not go about your business. While the baby is eating the finger foods you should see him.
- Do not push, do not rush, do not frighten, do not distract. Praise and talk only when the food has been chewed and swallowed.

IF YOU GAVE YOUR BABY TOO BIG OR TOO  SOLID BIT AND YOUR BABY CHOKES, IMMEDIATELY PROVIDE HIM FIRST AID. Right now watch the video and work it out.

But it is better, of course, not to risk it and start all the same with small and soft pieces of food.
